    Our mission includes a primary commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in every aspect of the work we do with a student body comes from across the United States and from around the world.  We serve as a direct and approachable resource for students who are experiencing difficulties.  Officers are expected to support the day-to-day safety and security functions of The College of Wooster for the Campus Safety Department.  Responsible for a full range of safety, security and administrative functions, including building inspections and emergency support services.  Responsible for promoting and maintaining community standards and maintaining a safe campus environment for members of the College community and visitors.  It is important that we create a welcoming, inclusive, student centered environment on campus, that we work to facilitate intervention and support.  Performs under general instructions, referring extraordinary problems to the Director of Campus Safety.  Reports to the Operations Supervisor, or the Night Shift Supervisor who works with the Director of Campus Safety towards the comprehensive responsibility of safety and security operations at the College of Wooster.

    • Acts as a first responder to all campus emergencies, medical or security related, that could potentially be hazardous and/or life threatening.
    • Conduct thorough safety checks of all college facilities in order to ensure their integrity and the safety of their contents, noting unusual occurrences.
    • Conducts both mobile and walking patrol of the campus throughout your scheduled shift.
    • Responds promptly and professionally to requests from students, employees and visitors for emergency and general security/safety services.
    • Enforce campus policies and procedures as may relate to safety and security concerns.
    • Assist Residence Life and Student Affairs with enforcement of hall regulations and the Code of Conduct Violations.
    • Partner with Residence Life staff to promote community on campus.
    • Observe and report hazardous conditions to the appropriate department.
    • May be required to perform incidental custodial and maintenance duties as required.
    • Provide awareness education/ information on an informal and sometimes formal basis to students, and employees.
    • Participates in writing and updating all manuals, policies and procedures for the Campus Safety Department.
    • Trains and supervises all student security officers of the Campus Safety Department, appraising their performance and writing incident reports on any positive or negative conduct or behavior.
    • Responsible for enforcing the parking regulation guidelines as stated in The College of Wooster’s ‘Motor Vehicle Regulation’ booklet, this includes the possible ticketing and towing of vehicles.
    • Locks and unlocks facilities as scheduled.
    • Submits comprehensive written reports on all incidents involving violations of the ‘Code of Social Responsibility’, criminal offenses, or suspicious or unusual circumstances.
    • Conducts follow up investigations as required or needed on reports written by you or other officers, which may include reviewing camera footage, and interviewing witnesses.
    • Enforces the rules, regulations and policies of the College, and applicable local/state/federal laws, in order to maintain a peaceful and orderly academic environment.
    • Assists the Director in preparation for special campus events, summer activities, break closing and projects.
    • Compiles, collects and reports information relating to safety and security matters to the appropriate staff members.
    • Responds to academic, administrative and residential lockouts.
    • Conducts mobile medical escorts to either the Wooster Clinic or the Wooster Community Hospital.
    • Conducts money escorts across campus as well as to the bank off campus.
    • Submits repair request for operational deficiencies found during your scheduled shift.
    • Performs all security, public safety, protective service or emergency/general duties as instructed by the Director or designated person.
    • Conducts programs and training in residence halls on a variety of subjects; parking education, bike registration, fire safety, and crime prevention, etc.
    • Implements and continuously monitors the Fire Safety Program at The College of Wooster including the replacement of fire extinguishers and equipment.
    • Promotes and support the community engagement goals of the Campus Safety Department.
    • Works closely with all members of the safety team.
    • Works overtime as work requires or as assigned by the Director of Campus Safety.




    Assists with the supervision and provides support for all student security officers and student employees.  Responsibilities may include assisting with the planning, assigning, and directing work to employees.

    Level of supervision received:  Periodic to general, depending on the situation.


    Bachelor’s (BA) in criminal justice, law enforcement science or related field and work experience in a college environment preferred.  Consideration will be given for related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations preferred:

    A valid Ohio Driver’s license and certification of formal police training approved by the Ohio Peace Officers Training Council or other recognized agency.

    Ability to read and interpret document such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write reports and correspondence.  Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students, faculty, staff and the public.

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.  Ability to deal with confidential matters sensitively.

This is a primarily sedentary role but requires some delivery and travel between building and departments. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Flexible work schedule with some evening and weekend work. While performing the duties of this job, the Officer regularly works in outside weather conditions.  The individual occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
