Position: Phlebotomist

Department: Clinical Laboratory

Reports to: Laboratory Manager/Supervisor

Summary: The phlebotomist is responsible for collection of specimens for analysis by medical technologist/technician. Prepares samples for transport to reference laboratory. Performs electrocardiogram tracings for interpretation and assists the laboratory staff by performing the following duties.

 

Job Requirements

Responsibilities:

  1. Performs blood collection by venipunctures and micro-collection techniques.
  2. Processes specimen to ensure the integrity of the sample prior to testing. Distributes specimens to the appropriate testing area.
  3. Performs patient hookups for Holter Monitor testing.
  4. Acquires electrocardiogram tracings for physician interpretation.
  5. Collects specimens for culturing and instructs patients in the proper collection procedure for self-collections of certain samples for culturing.
  6. Performs Chain-of Custody collections for specialized testing.
  7. Performs breath alcohol testing as required
  8. May be called on to make a home visit or travel to local nursing home to obtain blood sample.
  9. May be asked to alter regular work schedule in order to accommodate the needs of the department. May be asked to work at Lab West in order to accommodate the needs of that facility.
  10. Prepares and logs specimens being transported to clinical and pathology reference labs.
  11. Places lab supply orders to storeroom.
  12. Cleans glassware.
  13. Notifies laboratory manager of new tests being ordered that are not found in the LIS.
  14. Obtains CPT codes and reference lab information so the manager can develop new test charge and ordering information.
  15. Informs Medicare beneficiary of medical necessity laws and performs follow-
